Live: South Cambridgeshire District Council election results as they happen

Count results are arriving from the SCDC local elections
Count results are arriving from the SCDC local elections

The Lib Dems have won South Cambs from the Conservatives

The Liberal Democrats have secured a huge victory over the Conservatives by taking South Cambridgeshire.

The district had been Tory controlled and has had spells under no overall control.

Boundary Commission reviews mean the wards have been revised, and a new ward for Cambourne was introduced.

The council, which is now elected in full every four years, now has the following make-up:

• Liberal Democrat: 30

• Conservative: 11

• Labour: 2

• Independent: 2

A father and son have been elected, there have been wards where one vote has made all the difference and there have been some real upsets in a dramatic count.

There was a strong feeling on the doorsteps, according to South Cambridgeshire Tory MP Heidi Allen, that Brexit was playing a big part in the vote.

Prior to the voting yesterday the council composition has been:

• Conservative: 35

• Liberal Democrat: 14

• Independent: 6

• Labour: 1
