Giulio's murder also sparked intense campaigning to highlight the issue of forced disappearances in Egypt supported by Amnesty International.

On Monday 8 May, campaigners involved in a battle for justice for murdered Italian Cambridge PhD student Giulio Regeni, and hundreds of other victims of enforced disappearance in Egypt, will meet to discuss the next steps in the long-running campaign to establish how and why Giulio was murdered in January 2016.

Following a year-long investigation by Italian public prosecutors, the Italian government recently presented Egyptian officials with a list of suspects who they believe were responsible for his disappearance, torture and murder.

Thousands of human rights campaigners, academics, students and trade unionists have taken part in protests, vigils and meetings and signed statements and petitions calling for truth and justice for Giulio and all those affected by forced disappearances in Egypt. Giulio’s parents in Italy have been particularly active in in pursuing justice for Giulio.

In this public meeting on Monday, which wraps up a nationwide tour of speaking events around UK University campuses, John Chalcraft, associate prof at LSE and other expert speakers will examine the interaction between the judicial, diplomatic and political efforts to uncover the truth and secure justice, and ask what are the next steps for the campaign.

The meeting will open with the first public performance of a short piece of music composed especially for the campaign by Ben Adams in memory of Giulio Regeni.

The meeting is organised by Cambridge University Amnesty International, Cambridge City Amnesty group and Egypt Solidarity Initiative and supported by Cambridge UCU and Cambridge NUJ.

Find out more about the campaign online at www.amnesty.org.uk/giulio.

The 8 May meeting starts at 7pm in the Latimer Room at Clare College, Cambridge and all are welcome.
