Lucy Frazer has been returned as MP for South East Cambridgeshire to retain the seat for the Conservative Party.

The Cambridge University graduate and former barrister, who has represented the constituency since May 2015, received 33,601 votes – well up on the 28,845 she polled in 2015.

With this, Ms Frazer secured more than 50 per cent of the vote for the first time in the constituency since 1992.

Labour’s Huw Jones took second place and pushed Liberal Democrat Lucy Nethsingha into third. It is the first time since 1997 that the Lib Dems have not secured second place.

Because of the Labour resurgence in the constituency Ms Frazer does have a slightly reduced majority of 16,158 compared with 16,837 in 2015.

Speaking after the result, Ms Frazer said: “I just want to thank everyone else who has made this possible. It is impossible to win an election on your own and many people have made this fantastic result in South East Cambridgeshire tonight possible.

“Firstly, to Debbie, my amazing agent, and to a hugely amazing team of volunteers and councillors, and to my husband and to my family.”

She praised the work of East Cambridgeshire Council, her opponents and to the police, who she said had done an “incredible job silently in the background always keeping us safe”. Ms Frazer added: “I entered politics to make a difference and I’ve learnt over the last two years that it is absolutely possible to do so.

“Sometimes it’s difficult, sometimes you’ll think it’s impossible, and sometimes it takes a long time but it is possible to do so and I am absolutely honoured and delighted to be able to continue the work that I have been doing for South East Cambridgeshire over the last two years.”

Mr Jones said he was pleased with Labour’s result in Cambridge and neighbouring counties as well as the wins which were declared in Peterborough and Ipswich where Labour gained the seats from the Tories.
