Simon Saggers, Green Party candidate on the May 3 South Cambridgeshire District Council elections
Green Party policies are based on the unarguable truth that without a healthy planet nothing else is possible.
Our prosperity depends on a liveable planet so the climate, resource and bio-diversity crises we face present the human race with a challenge that should be at the top of the political agenda. We need to make bold changes and return to ‘one planet living’ if we want our children’s children to inherit a planet that is a good home.
Greens want better, not more. We offer new hope, not business as usual – we would put equality and equity centre stage of a ‘steady state’ economy which provides a living for all, not just massive profits for a few.
We want to create a ‘greater Cambridge’ that is more self-reliant and shows that a transition to a cleaner and greener life can be an exciting journey...
n Greens will invest in public transport. Cambridge and South Cambs needs a public transport network to be proud of. We can’t continue to develop business parks and housing without a world class, interconnected public transport system. We need better trains, better bus services and an extensive, joined-up cycle network. As developments occur we need to ensure we protect our green spaces: vital for both people and wildlife.
n Greens will build more affordable houses for LOCAL people. We would use local housing trusts to ensure that these homes are not sold into the market and always retained for local people. We need a local planning system that gives our villages real control over planning decisions. We want investment in renewable energy, not incineration, to keep reducing pollution and our reliance on fossil fuels. We would develop a subsidised district-wide energy efficient retro-fit to upgrade the housing stock, cut bills and reduce carbon pollution.
n Greens will campaign for a ‘Peoples poll’ on the terms of the final Brexit deal. We will continue to fight the government plans for an extreme Brexit.
The Green Party is funded by members and supporters, not by big business. Our politicians are allowed to follow their own judgement rather than being forced to vote along Party lines. This means you can be sure your Green representative will be able to take independent decisions for the good of local people.
Please vote Green and play a part in creating a brighter, greener future for our children.
