Cambridge United have released two players from their Sky Bet League Two promotion-winning squad.

The U's have published their retained and released list, which largely sees new contracts offered to the bulk of the squad.

But one player who will be departing the U's is goalkeeper Callum Burton.

He made 33 appearances in all competitions last season, including the last 22 games after Dimi Mitov suffered a shoulder injury.

Youngster Joe Neal will also be leaving after 13 years with the U's, while Leon Davies has accepted a short-term deal for six months as he continues his recuperation from hip surgery.

The loan spells of Declan Drysdale, Aji Alese, Shilow Tracey, Jubril Okedina and Hiram Boateng have all come to an end and they return to their parent clubs.

U's head coach Mark Bonner said: “These decisions are always difficult and none more so than this year. Callum Burton's contribution to the successful season we have experienced has been excellent. We all remember some of the key saves and moments that have scored us vital points throughout the season and he was a big part of the squad.

"Over his two years with us, Callum has made a good impression and developed well, gathering some vital experiences that will be of benefit to him in the future.

“Joe Neal has been with the club since the age of seven, and has had to contend with a challenging year for all young professionals. His commitment to the club and his development has been superb, and we will support him in the next stages of his career to try to help him find the most suitable club to continue the next part of his development.

“Leon Davies recently underwent hip surgery and is now recuperating from the operation. Over the coming months we will support him through his rehabilitation and return to training and playing to get him back to full fitness.

“We are thankful to the players who have contributed during their time on loan and they now return to their parent clubs with our best wishes.”

Looking to the future, United have offered new contracts to Dimitar Mitov, Kyle Knoyle, Paul Digby, Greg Taylor, Luke Hannant, Liam O’Neil, Andrew Dallas, Paul Mullin, Harrison Dunk and Ben Worman.

Discussions remain ongoing with Wes Hoolahan, while Adam May has had a contract option triggered.

Joe Ironside, Jack Iredale, Harvey Knibbs, Kai Mckenzie-Lyle, Tom Dickens and Lewis Simper are under contract for the 2021/22 season.
