Cambridge United fall to record League defeat in loss to Luton Town
U's are humbled at Kenilworth Road
Cambridge United suffered a League record 7-0 defeat to Luton Town in Sky Bet League Two on Saturday.
The U’s were without the suspended Uche Ikpeazu and fellow striker Jabo Ibehre, for personal reasons, and that brought George Maris and Liam O’Neil into the starting line-up.
Luton took the game to United from the off, with keeper David Forde having to make saves from Danny Hylton and Scott Cuthbert inside the first 10 minutes.
The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute when Dan Potts tapped home a deflected Luton effort at the far post.
Olly Lee scored a stunning second for Luton in the 31st minute, dispossessing United in his own half to then fire an amazing lob over Forde.
Four minutes later, Danny Hylton grabbed his first with a left-footed shot into the bottom corner, and then in injury time, he chipped a ball through for Elliot Lee, who volleyed into the top corner to make it 4-0.
United sent on substitutes Emmanuel Osadebe, David Amoo and Paul Lewis after half time and it helped them have a bit more of the ball.
Andrew Shinnie had an effort for Luton that hit the post, and then Leon Legge was called on to head a chance from the same player off the line.
It was a late rally of goals in the last 10 minutes that inflicted further damage on the U’s though.
Hylton got his second in the 81st minute, finishing off Jack Stacey’s low cross, then Elliott Lee added his second from 20 yards.
And Hylton completed his hat-trick from Alan Sheehan’s free kick in stoppage time.
All in all, it was an awful after for the U’s, with head coach Shaun Derry describing the performance as “disgusting” and “disastrous”.
