Junaid Sheikh stars for Cambridge St Giles in draw with St Ives

Junaid Sheikh had a pivotal role in Cambridge St Giles’ draw with St Ives Town in Whiting & Partners Cambs and Hunts Premier League, Division Two.

St Ives batted first and made steady progress with plenty of their top order getting starts.

However, they were unable to turn them into big scores as St Giles shared around the wickets.

Sheikh finished with three for 51 and Tariq Aziz took two for 28 as St Ives were dismissed for 226.

It was a bit more in reverse for St Giles though, as they failed to get going at the top of the innings.

However, Matt Samson made 45 and Sheikh struck 61 as St Giles were also bowled out for 226, leaving the match tied.

But St Giles are top of the early table, with 140 points compared to Thriplow’s current haul of 135. And the two are due to face each other this Saturday.

Great Shelford’s struggle to find a win continued as they lost by seven wickets to Saffron Walden II.

Luke Ennew made 27 for Shelford at No 8, but the only other batsmen to get into double figures were Alan Sutton (16) and Aaron Spillett (11) as they were bowled out for 125.

Alexander Thomas and Adam Whitehead got three wickets apiece for Walden.

Sebastian Contos led the charge for Walden, hitting 72 not out and with Alex Morley’s 22 and Ray Mordini’s 14 not out, they reached 127 for 3.

It leaves Shelford at the foot of the table without a win from their six games to date.

Cambridge Granta II suffered a three-wicket defeat to Huntingdon & District.

Granta were dismissed for 173, and Huntingdon then reached 174 for 7.

With just two wins so far, Granta are third from bottom.

And Great Shelford and Granta face each other this Saturday (June 9).
