900Mbps full fibre broadband available in Chesterton and King’s Hedges

Chesterton and King’s Hedges are the first places in Cambridge to benefit from Vodafone’s Gigafast full fibre broadband service.

Offering speeds of up to 900Mbps, it provides download speeds 20 times faster and upload speeds 150 times faster than the average UK broadband connection.

The service is being rolled out elsewhere in the city as infrastructure provider CityFibre deploys a full fibre network over the next two years.

Max Taylor, Vodafone UK’s consumer director, said: “The introduction of full fibre broadband to Cambridge provides residents, students and the growing number of technology start-ups with ultra-fast and reliable digital connectivity. We are working with our infrastructure partner, CityFibre, to connect up homes across the city with the aim to offer more than 4,500 households access to the service within the first three months of 2020.”

Matthew Neave, from Embassy Lettings & Management, is among the first customers.

He said: “I will principally be using the service for my residential lettings business based here in Cambridge. We are 98 per cent paperless and we rely heavily on a fast and reliable broadband service for uploading and downloading large documents. The service will allow me to do this quickly and safely, which is imperative for the business.”

Vodafone says households will be able to stream movies, play online games and upload videos and photos across multiple devices at the same time, with no lag or buffering, using the service.

Charles Kitchin, CityFibre’s city manager for Cambridge, said: “Today’s announcement follows a £20m investment from CityFibre to bring a gigabit-capable full fibre network to Cambridge. We are making the city one of the best-connected places in the country. We’ve made huge progress so far, it is tremendous to see the first homes and businesses now reaping the benefits of full fibre and seeing first-hand the difference it can make to their lives.”

Vodafone is offering 100, 500 and 900Mbps packages, starting at £28 per month.
