Great Abington’s ARCC launches new cargo e-bike to carry up to three children

Great Abington-based bike specialist ARCC Innovations has launches its new Linton family cargo e-bike (23 April) with a mission to reset our relationship with the car.

The company has developed what it says is the first, fully UK-made, most realistic alternative to using a car for the school run.

ARCC’s team which has a 12-year history in the electrical adaptation of many popular bicycles, has spent two years testing and refining the newly-launched Linton Cargo e-bike from its innovation centre. Its goal, it says, has always been to produce a genuine alternative to a family car that actually works for families in the UK.

The battery powered bike weighs from just 24kg - the lightest of its genre - with a max gross weight of 200kg. It fits up to three children and one adult, or up to 120kg of cargo. It is handcrafted from Chromoly and stainless steel at the company’s base in Great Abington.

One of the designers, Ross Atkin, said: “Family cargo bikes like the Linton could transform the way we think about the school run in the UK. Far too many of these journeys are made in cars, with negative consequences for those both inside and outside of those cars, as well as society and the planet more widely.

“We’ve created an alternative that fits into people’s lives better than anything else on the market, helping more people save money and lead healthier, more convenient lives.”

He adds: “Family cargo bikes can bring freedom and fun to the school run but because the leading models are so heavy they can end up replacing stress about traffic and parking spaces with stress about theft, or getting trapped by unexpected kerbs or steps. The Linton is the first bike on the market that truly delivers stress-free school runs.”

The most recent UK National Travel Survey reported that 45 per cent of trips to and from school for children aged five to ten were made by car.

In a bid to encourage more to switch from cars to bikes, ARCC is committing to buy back any Linton that a family subsequently grows out of up to 50 per cent of the original sale price.

The move will enable them to re-manufacture that bike and sell it at a lower price to other families in the future.

ARCC’s new Linton Family Cargo is priced from £5,500.
