A spin-out of Cambridge University, Cambridge GaN Devices is a fabless semiconductor company that develops a range of energy-efficient GaN-based power devices to make greener electronics possible.

The company emerged from stealth in March to announce the launch of its first portfolio of products capable of reducing power losses by up to 50 per cent. The company’s new base at The Jeffreys Building more than doubles the size of its previous facilities to 3,950sq ft.

Operating at a market worth exceeding $30bn, CGD completed its $9.5m Series A fundraising last year. It has since launched a project called ICeData that could contribute to saving more than eight megatons – that’s million metric tons – of CO2 emissions from data centres annually by 2030. Data centres account for about two per cent of the world’s energy usage - and consumption is growing fast.

It aims to develop and commercialise a highly efficient gallium nitride (GaN)-based integrated circuit (IC) for use in data centre server power supplies.

Dr Giorgia Longobardi, founder and CEO, said: “Collaboration and innovation are core pillars of the way we work. Being part of a wider campus of like-minded companies focussed on pioneering R&D was hugely attractive and a big part of our choice to locate ourselves at St John’s Innovation Park.

“We are also drawn to the Park’s location, outdoor space and its commitment to improving the ESG footprint of the office environment. Within our new office space, we hope to share our unique identity with our many visitors and partners that will accompany us in this exciting scale-up phase.”

The official office opening was marked with an early evening celebration involving the CGD team, its board, investors and other guests at The Jeffreys Building, an impressive three storey headquarters building commanding a key position on St John’s Innovation Park.

Suzie Wood, investment property manager, St John’s College, added: “St John’s College is committed to improving sustainability, so we’re particularly delighted to welcome Cambridge GaN Devices to the Park, a company developing ingenious green solutions for everyday electronics, respecting our planet’s natural resources, and creating a more sustainable future for the generations to come.”
