Cambridge office of EY takes on 18 new recruits in spite of Covid-19
The Cambridge office of EY has welcomed 18 new recruits - a rise on last year, in spite of Covid-19
Its graduate and apprentice intake was up 20 per cent this September compared to last year.
Twelve graduates - up two on last year - and six business apprentices, up one on 2019, joined the assurance, tax, transaction and advisory services company in Cambridge.
Twelve virtually-based summer interns and four Year 12 business academy students also enjoyed work experience, an increase of nine on last year.
Across the UK, EY has taken on 1,048 graduates and apprentices this year, up from 1,011, in spite of Covid-19. Some 43 per cent are female, up from 39 per cent, and 41 per cent are from ethnic minorities, up from 38 per cent, as EY aims to recruit from a diverse pool of candidates.
Stuart Wilkinson, office managing partner at EY in the East of England, said: “I’m delighted to welcome the new student intake for 2020 to the business and really pleased to see that we’ve increased our numbers so considerably. This really reflects the growth of the Cambridge office and focus on winning new work from existing clients and gaining new clients across the East of England. It’s an exciting time to be joining EY Cambridge and I’m really pleased that we’ve managed to attract some of the best young talent from across the region to join the team.
“The Cambridge office provides a variety of assurance, including tax and indirect tax, related services to some of the region’s most high-profile businesses and public sector organisations. Our assurance team has welcomed the most new joiners, although, we’ve also welcomed a new graduate to our tax team.
“Young talent is essential to our future business success and to shaping the skills we will need to remain competitive. I’m proud that we’ve maintained our commitment to student recruitment this year, despite Covid-19, and that we’ve honoured all the conditional offers we made prior to A-level results.
“At a time when many young people are facing a challenging labour market, our apprenticeship, graduate and internship programmes provide students and school leavers with a great opportunity to gain real hands-on experience, while also enhancing their skills and gaining a qualification."
The firm has committed to ensuring 30 per cent of the work experience places on the EY Foundation’s Smart Futures/Our Futures programmes will be offered to black young people for the next five years from September 2021. It also has a target of offering at least 30 per cent of places on its school leaver pathways to black alumni from the Smart Futures and Our Futures programmes from next year.
