HSBC to close Cambridge branch - plus full list of 69 closures

HSBC is to close its branch in Hills Road, Cambridge, from July 21.

The bank is shutting 69 branches across the country as customers continue to switch to online services, with less than 50 per cent now regularly using its branch network.

A spokesman for the bank said that it hopes to redeploy all 400 staff affected to new roles within 15 miles of their homes.

The other HSBC branch, in St Andrew’s Street, will remain open, but the branch in Newmarket is also to be axed, with its closure due on September 8.

Jackie Uhi, head of HSBC UK’s branch network, said: “The way people bank is changing – something the pandemic has accelerated.

“Our branches continue to support people with their more complex banking needs, but the way we can do this has also evolved, with the addition of banking hubs, community pop ups and continued use of the Post Office network.

“Rather than a one-size-fits-all branch approach, it’s an approach built around the way different customers are choosing to bank in different areas.”

HSBC said it was not closing any branches that are the last in their town.
