Orca Scan: ‘Print fully compliant barcode labels in just minutes, with no design experience’

Orca Scan has released the Barcode Label Designer, “a new and innovative tool designed to give businesses of all sizes the ability to design, create and print fully-compliant barcode labels in minutes”.

The new web-based tool allows businesses of all sizes to design, create, and print fully compliant barcode labels in just minutes, with no design experience or coding required.

The Barcode Label Designer features pre-configured industry templates and an intuitive drag-and-drop interface, and is compatible with printers including from Brother, Dymo, and Zebra. It builds on the suite of free tools, including the Barcode Generator, Barcode Decoder, and Open Graph Validator.

Orca Scan was founded by John Doherty in 2016. A long-time coder, he was working at Cambridge Assessment when “my son asked me to build an app to help with his summer job scanning barcodes”.

When he put the scanner out as an app, it started selling, and John – who’s both CEO and CTO – went on an Accelerate Cambridge course. Orca Scan then raised “a small amount” of investment cash and went to San Francisco for three months, “working with customers to understand their needs and tweak the product”.

The experience paid off and today Orca Scan is used by 60 per cent of Fortune 500 companies, including teams at Apple, GSK, and General Motors. Industry recognition – including winning the ‘Tech for Good’ award at Cambridge Independent’s 2024 Science & Technology Awards – has followed, and today Orca Scan has a team of 20 who work across the globe, while John continues to operate from Allia Guildhall in the centre of Cambridge with a core team including partnership manager Tim Hill.

“Orca Scan now includes the new label designer feature, available for free to everyone who registers for an Orca Scan account,” says Tim.

A barcode can be selected in one of two ways, either by scanning an existing barcode on a product or, if a product doesn’t have a barcode, you can generate one in Orca Scan.

“To generate a barcode,” says Tim, “they need to log into orcascan.com, open or create a sheet, press ‘enter’ in the ‘barcode’ field, and Orca Scan will automatically generate a unique barcode for them.”

John Doherty, CEO/CTO and founder at Orca Scan, said: “The release of the Barcode Label Designer solidifies Orca Scan’s position as the one-stop platform for all things barcodes.

“We’ve listened to our customers across all sectors to create a simple, web-based solution that requires no barcode knowledge or design experience.

“Now, companies of all sizes can effortlessly create, print and track barcodes all in one platform.”
