Penningtons Manches completes merger with shipping specialist Thomas Cooper
Penningtons Manches, the law firm with an office in Cambridge, has completed its merger with Thomas Cooper, extending its international reach and ensuring European access post-Brexit.
Known for its work in shipping, international trade and international arbitration, Thomas Cooper has offices in London, Paris, Madrid, Piraeus, Singapore and Sao Paulo.
The integrated business - Penningtons Manches Cooper - will have a combined turnover of more than £90million.
It is the first major attraction for the Cambridge business since Penningtons joined forces with Manches in 2013 in what proved to be one of the most successful mid-sized law firm mergers of recent years.
In 2014, Penningtons Manches established a San Francisco office, which the firm says has had significant benefits for the Cambridge office and its clients.
The new merger is designed to develop the firm’s global reach and ensures continued access to the European Union once the UK leaves.
Cambridge partner Helen Drayton said: “This is very exciting move for the firm and the team here in Cambridge. Our international mind-set has always been a big attraction for our clients, with our office in San Francisco already giving us a unique offering here.
“The access we now have to the major tech hubs in Singapore and Paris along with their skilled teams in a range of areas will enhance what we can offer our clients even further.”
In addition to its Cambridge office off Clarendon Road, the top 50 law firm already had offices in London, Oxford, Cambridge, Reading, Guildford and Basingstoke, and opened a Birmingham office in April.
Among its key expertise are dispute resolution, corporate and commercial, real estate, technology, private client and family.
The firm now has 141 partners and employs more than 850 people. It is the founder member of the European Law Group, an association of European law firms, and a member of Multilaw, an association of 73 firms in 60 countries.
