PervasID’s tech is key to 'world’s most accurate intelligent toolbox'

Tracking specialist PervasID’s technology is being used by CribMaster, a division of Stanley Black & Decker, to introduce ‘the world’s most accurate intelligent toolbox cabinet’ with in-built inventory and tool tracking capabilities.

Fast-growing PervasID, based at St John’s Innovation Centre, designs and supplies world-leading, passive (battery-free) RFID fixed reader systems for automating inventory tracking, stock taking and asset management processes.

The toolbox cabinets are aimed specifically at addressing major challenges in manufacturing. With greater accuracy, range and speed than any other RFID readers on the market, PervasID technology means that every tool - up to 500 - in the RFID-enabled CribMaster cabinet can be tracked in seconds.

The solution provides real-time accuracy of up to 99.9 per cent and could help to reduce problems arising from foreign object debris (FOD) in the aviation industry. It is estimated that FOD costs the aviation industry $13billion per year in direct and indirect costs, including flight delays, plane changes and fuel inefficiencies. Consequently, accountability for every tool is critical.

The positive tool control technology developed by CribMaster, enabled by PervasID, addresses these concerns directly. The CribMaster Accu line reads the passive RFID tag on a tool to guarantee it is in the cabinet and not left behind on the aircraft. Demand for the solution is so great that hundreds of units have already been deployed in one of North America’s largest aircraft manufacturers.

Larry Harper, founder of CribMaster, said: “Ultra-high accuracy and speed is fundamental to a production line process where safety is the number one priority. PervasID’s passive RFID systems are capable of detecting all tagged items in just a few seconds, giving the aviation industry the accuracy levels and visibility needs for decisive decision making.”

Sabesan Sithamparanathan, founder and CEO of PervasID, added: “Jointly working with CribMaster, PervasID have solved the historical poor accuracy issues of tool tracking using our ground-breaking passive RFID innovation from the University of Cambridge.

“PervasID are excited to explore a joint vision of extending the solution in ways which will further develop embedded internet of things with artificial intelligence. Future applications may include intelligent asset tracking and safety systems to truly transform the market.”

The Cambridge Independent SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards – in which PervasID won the Best Enterprising Business and Business Innovation awards last year – will be held in 2021, having been postponed from October amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Entry is reopening to enable those who did not get a chance to take part to enter, except in four categories that are already fully subscribed.

Those who have submitted entries already do not need to do anything – their entries will be carried forward. For anyone else, entry is free and available online at cambridgeshireawards.co.uk until 3pm on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

Winners of the SME Cambridgeshire Business Awards will go on to the 2021 National SME Business Awards.
