St Mary’s School – the place to be me

At St Mary’s we’ve been educating and empowering girls since 1898, developing engaged, compassionate young women with the aspirations, confidence, and integrity to be themselves and help shape a better world.

Through High Performance Learning (HPL), we teach our girls to understand how they learn, as well as what they learn. The result is excellent academic outcomes and young adults, who are curious, community-minded, resilient, and ready to go out and make a positive contribution to society.

From the moment they start at St Mary’s, our girls are taught to dream big and strive to reach their full potential. Supporting and challenging them in equal measure, we encourage them to believe anything is possible and nothing is out of their reach. At St Mary’s all subjects are ‘for girls’. In a nurturing, supportive environment, students are encouraged to pursue their interests with no academic path off limits. We also work hard to instil them with a passion for maths and science, subjects that girls have historically been less keen to pursue, particularly in co-ed settings.

A unique offering

Within Cambridge, St Mary’s all-girls offer is unique. We excel at educating girls, and others agree. Our first-class education status was recently reinforced when we received the highest grade of ‘excellent’ in our ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) inspection. We achieved the top grade of ‘excellent’ in both aspects of the Education Quality Inspection, covering the quality of pupils’ academic achievements and their personal development. Inspectors also praised the quality of our teaching and parents concurred, giving us an outstanding overall satisfaction rate of 98 per cent.

Excellent academic outcomes

At St Mary’s the secret to our success is student happiness. We know that contented girls accomplish so much more. In 2022, we saw a jubilant return to public examinations with 66 per cent of GCSE grades awarded at A* or A (9-7) and 72 per cent of A-levels at grades A* to B. Our international sixth form students recently received outstanding results in their International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examinations. We’ve also been named one of the best places to study Mandarin in the UK.

The place to be me!

While our academic accolades speak for themselves, studying at St Mary’s is about so much more. Exam qualifications open doors for our girls, but it is their self-belief, persistence and drive that keeps the door open. Nurturing our students to achieve the best results they can, we help them explore who they are and develop a sense of their own worth. At St Mary’s, pupils find the inspiration, opportunity and support they need to be themselves and pursue their individual talents with confidence and joy so they can succeed in life, whatever their future ambitions. Whether your interest lies in sports or STEM, St Mary’s really is the place to be you.

‘Strong progress in class and highly successful beyond classroom’

When reporting on academic and other achievements in St Mary’s recent ‘excellent’ ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) inspection, inspectors said: “Pupils make strong progress across the range of subjects” and are “highly successful in their achievements beyond the classroom in a range of activities encompassing different interests”.
