Enjoy a swim under the stars at Jesus Green lido in Cambridge
Jesus Green lido - one of the few remaining examples of the lidos that were built across the country in the 1920s and 30s - is opening in the evenings during November for the first time.
The lido - the largest pool in Cambridge and one of the longest outdoor pools in the country - will be open at the following times: Monday 7am-11am and 4pm-7pm, Tuesday 7am-11am, Thursday 7am-11am and 4pm-7pm and Sunday 7am-4pm. It will be closed on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Memberships will remain live throughout the winter months, which allowed the extended hours to be made possible. If the water becomes a little too chilly as the winter months draw in then swimmers are reminded that selected membership also includes access to more than 150 swimming pools across the UK and includes local indoor pools in Cambridge at Parkside Pools and Gym and Abbey Leisure Complex.
The lido is operated by charitable social enterprise Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL), under the Better brand. Following a very difficult 2020, when the pool was only open for seven weeks due to the national lockdowns, visitor numbers in the summer exceeded those of 2019, with Jesus Green enjoying almost 60,000 visits in 2021.
Daryl Emes, partnership manager for Better, said: “We’ve been really pleased with the uptake since extending the season beyond September. Therefore we’re delighted to now be able to offer swimming at certain days and times from November too.
“The support from our customers for this wonderful facility never ceases to amaze us and we look forward to keeping them swimming into November and possibly beyond. We should remind people though that cold water swimming does come with its own risks so wetsuits are strongly recommended as well as following the guidance from our staff and on our website.”
Cambridge Council’s executive councillor for communities, Anna Smith, added: “I'm delighted the trial has been going so well, and people will be able to continue to enjoy and benefit from swimming in the outdoor lido. Also, thanks to GLL and the city council team for all their hard work over many months to make this happen.”
Anyone wishing to use the facility must book their swim in advance at better.org.uk/leisurecentre/cambridge/jesusgreenlido. Visitors can swim for up to an hour. Social distancing rules apply and swimmers are reminded to come ready to swim as you will only be able to access the changing rooms after your swim.
