100 tonnes of recycling waste burn as fire hits waste site in Cowley Road, Cambridge
About 100 tonnes of recycling waste went up in smoke when fire broke out at a waste transfer site in Cambridge.
Fire crews were called to the industrial site in Cowley Road at 5.36pm yesterday (Tuesday) and managed to stop the blaze spreading.
A large plume of smoke was visible, and residents nearby were advised to keep their doors and windows shut.
More than 30 firefighters, including crews from Cambridge, Ely, Burwell, Sawston, Huntingdon and Cottenham, along with crews from Newmarket in Suffolk, attended the incident.
The road was closed temporarily.
Fire crews used machinery to break up the piles of waste as they dampened it down, before returning to their stations at 11.30pm.
Ben Fawcitt, station commander at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We’ve worked hard and managed to stop the fire spread. I’d like to thank the patience of people affected and disrupted by the closure of the roads.”
The fire service will be reinspecting the site to confirm the fire is fully out.
The cause of the blaze is not yet known and an investigation is under way.
