19 people injured in crash between fire engine and two guided buses in South Cambridgeshire




At least 19 people, including children, have suffered injuries following a crash between a fire engine and two guided buses in South Cambridgeshire today (Wednesday, 16 April).

One person is known to have suffered serious injuries and is among 11 people who have been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital following the collision on the B1050 Station Road near Northstowe and Longstanton. One of those taken to hospital was a firefighter.

Other fire crews arrived to release the driver of one of the guided buses.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson told the Cambridge Independent: “Four ambulances, three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles, two paramedic cars and East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Magpas air ambulance have been sent to Station Road, Longstanton, following reports of a bus and a fire and rescue appliance being involved in a road traffic collision.

“Four patients were transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital by ambulance, one with serious injuries.

“Fifteen other patients with less serious injuries, including children, were assessed at the scene and, of those, seven were transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.”

A Cambridgeshire police spokesperson said: “We were called at about 2.05pm today (16 April) with reports of a collision on B1050 Station Road between Longstanton and Willingham. The collision involved a fire engine and two guided buses and there have been a number of people injured. Officers and paramedics are currently at the scene.”

A Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Just after 2pm today a fire engine was involved in a road traffic collision with a guided bus on Station Road in between Longstanton and Willingham.

“The fire engine, with the rescue vehicle, was on its way to an incident. Three firefighters were on the fire engine. Two sustained minor injuries, one of whom was taken to hospital for a precautionary check and has since been released. Other crews arrived at the scene and worked with ambulance colleagues to release the driver of one of the guided buses who was left in the care of paramedics.”

A spokesperson for bus company Stagecoach East said: "We can confirm that two of our vehicles were involved in an incident on 16 April at Longstanton, crossing the B1050.

“Our first thoughts are for the welfare of those affected by the incident. Safety is our absolute priority and we will carry out a full investigation into the circumstances as well as assisting police with their inquiries.”

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council, which manages the guided busway, said: “We’re aware of a road traffic collision at the crossroads on the B1050 Station Road, Northstowe. The incident occurred this afternoon (Wednesday, 16 April) at 2.10pm. It involved a fire engine and two buses.

“We’re working with the emergency services, and the bus operator. The road is closed in both directions and buses on the guided busway will be diverted.

“The diversion route is via Longstanton roundabout to the A1307 at Swavesey to Over crossroads.”

The crash came on the same day that the county council was fined £6million for safety failures on the guided busway between its opening in 2011 until late 2021, which led to the deaths of three adults and serous injuries to two children.
