Thousands of runners took part in the 2022 Cambridge Race for Life on Sunday (July 3), raising vital funds for Cancer Research UK.

About 2,700 participants - plus a few four-legged friends - were due to take part this year and it is hoped they will have raised about £210,000 for life-saving research, much of which is done at the CRUK Cambridge Institute.

Following a warm-up, the starting bell was rung by a member of the family of Tracey Ryan, of Cherry Hinton, in her memory. Tracey died from cancer in May - almost 20 years after her first diagnosis.

Prior to the race, Sophie, Tracey’s eldest daughter, said: “Mum was just an amazing woman. She fought hard and all of us felt we had extra time together due to cancer research. She was a massive supporter of Cancer Research UK through Race for Life, so it will mean a lot to be able to start this year’s event in her memory.”
She recalled: “She was so chirpy and never stopped being that person everyone relied on.”

Many members of the family were among those taking part. The Race for Trace team had raised more than £2,000 beforehand.

Runners and walkers tackled 5k and 10k routes. Starting at Jesus Green, it went through the city centre, past the market square, through the grounds of King’s College, and, for those tackling the 10k, rather than the 5k, there is an additional loop up to Stourbridge Common along the River Cam and back before it returns to Jesus Green.

Michael Jarvis, Cancer Research UK’s spokesperson in the East of England, said: “Sadly, cancer affects all of us in some way, but together we’ll beat cancer.”
The run, in partnership with Tesco, raises funds for research to help beat 200 types of cancer – including bowel cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, testicular cancer, brain cancer, children’s cancers and leukaemia.
