Arsonists to blame for Impington Village College fire, say Cambridgeshire police
The fire at Impington Village College has been confirmed as an arson attack.
Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious behaviour in the area to get in touch with them.
Fire crews and police were called to the college in New Road just before 10.30pm on Sunday night and found a large skip and other rubbish on fire.
The flames had begun to spread and firefighters battled to prevent damage to the school.
Gas cylinders were heard exploding by neighbouring residents.
The fire was under control by 1.10am and crews left the scene by 2pm, returning today to conduct a full investigation.
Sergeant Emma Hilson, from the South Cambs neighbourhood team, said: “It is believed this was a deliberate act and we’re keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity or unfamiliar people in the area around the time of the incident.
“Thankfully the damage to the school was fairly minimal and staff and teachers caring for key workers’ children have been able to resume as normal this morning.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting reference 35/29200/20 or report online www.cambs.police.uk/report.
