Want to own a Dinky Door?

You now have the chance, as Cambridge’s mysterious street artists are putting their work up for sale for the first time at an online auction.

Hosted by Bargain Hunt’s Charles Hanson on January 26, the proceeds will be split between the charity Cambridge Street Aid and the Dinky Doors artists, helping them to create more brilliant art.

The creations, which magically appear overnight in public places, have become hugely popular works of street art, each with their own unique story.

Among them is 10 (and a quarter) Downing Street, a homage to the Prime Minister’s home, and OctoSpa, a deluxe B&B spa for octopuses

These are among 10 Dinky Doors that are now available to bid on via the Dinky Present Hunt Auction website.

Nine of them have been hidden around the Grand Arcade in recent weeks for a festive present-hunting game that paid homage to the Dinky Doors around the city’s streets.

The lots include:

  • Ye Olde Knight Rider - Tells the story of a legendary (and immoral) Dark Night Rider.
  • Foto Dinky Mat - An homage to an original Dinky Door that was installed on Mill Road Bridge in March 2021 (you might recognise the colourful background)
  • Bean there done Art - An ode to an upcoming Dinky Doors installation that's billed to be their biggest project yet!
  • Rocket Rocket - An out-of-this-world love letter to The Little Prince by Antione De Saint Exupery
  • Ride and Park - A magical little portal that pays homage to some of Cambridge's best-loved outdoor spaces
  • Love From Above - An artistic representation of a sweet love story between Mr D Mon (a demon) and Angie (an angel).
  • The Wonder Emporium Present - Behind the scenes of the Dinky shop that sells all the tiny things we lose
  • Mage’s Pages - In a city that's all about books and learning, you can capture the magic of reading with this tiny spellbook
  • OctoSpa - The world’s first -and only - deluxe B&B spa for octopuses
  • 10 (and a quarter Downing Street) – An original Dinky Door, lightly refurbished and framed after spending three years on the streets of Cambridge.

Two additional original Dinky Doors artworks are up for grabs, as well as the chance to meet the anonymous artists - who will retain their disguise, of course.

Buyers can choose what they wish to do with their Dinky Door, but if it is placed outside or somewhere visible then, with the buyer’s permission, the artists will feature it on their website so that others can find them.

Each of the doors is made from tough stainless steel and is designed to withstand all types of weather. Any future maintenance or repairs will be the responsibility of the new owners.

Bidding is open online now and closes at 5pm on January 25. It will recommence at 7.30pm on January 26 for the live auction.
