British Red Cross mobility service opens at new Cambridge site

A British Cross service that helps people stay mobile is now offered at a new site in Cambridge.

The charity’s mobility aids service is helping to provide wheelchair hire and equipment from Lothbury House, within the Technopark close to the junction of Newmarket Road and Ditton Lane.

It offers a range of aids available for hire at reasonable rates for short- and medium-term use to help people maintain independence at home, including manual wheelchairs, toilet and bathroom equipment and walking aids.

Second-hand items are also available to buy and the service welcomes donations of good quality mobility equipment.

Joanna Hutchings, mobility aids service assistant for the British Red Cross, said: “It is fantastic to be here at our new site in Cambridge. We know this service makes a genuine difference to people’s lives and our charity’s research has shown that wheelchairs can support people to recover from illness and injury, improving choice, independence and wellbeing.

“We are always looking for new volunteers to join our exciting team so that we can help as many people as possible.”

A team of volunteers and staff run the site, which is open to the public from Monday to Thursday, from 10am to 3pm. It can also be contacted by phone on 07590 962907.

The British Red Cross also offers local support to people experiencing difficulties with their mobility following surgery, accidents and illnesses.

The charity is the nation’s biggest provider of wheelchairs for short-term use of up to 20 weeks and assisted around 50,000 people in 2019. It may also be able to help those struggling to meet the cost of a wheelchair.
