Cambridge bakery Fitzbillies to open new King’s Parade site

Historic 103-year-old Cambridge bakery Fitzbillies is set to expand this autumn with a new shop in King’s Parade.

The premises, previously Noa Noa, will be transformed with a bakery counter at the front and seating for customers at the rear.

The expansion follows the news earlier this year that Fitzbillies is increasing the size of its original Trumpington Street outlet by expanding into the neighbouring unit.

The King’s Parade premises will be similar to the Fitzbillies Bridge Street bakery and coffee shop.

It will open this autumn and sell bread, cakes and pastries, hot and cold sandwiches, artisan coffee and ice cream to eat in or take away.

Owner Alison Wright said: “Thanks very much to all our customers and our talented and hardworking staff for making the Trumpington Street and Bridge Street branches of Fitzbillies so busy that we are able to consider taking on extra space.

“We’re really looking forward to welcoming customers at our new bakery and coffee shop right opposite the most iconic building in King’s College Chapel.”

A spokesperson for King’s College, which owns the property, said: “We are delighted that Fitzbillies is moving to King’s Parade.

“We’re keen to champion local, independent businesses and this is a great addition to one of the most beautiful streets in the world.”

The cake shop will move from the front of 52 Trumpington Street into the new space at 53 Trumpington Street, allowing for bigger displays of macarons, celebration cakes and of course Chelsea buns, and more room to sell ice cream.

Work is already under way to expand the bakery’s Trumpington Street location – and owners are keen to point out that the new premises will not affect their original branch.

Fitzbillies says it is “as committed to Trumpington Street as ever” which is why they are taking on additional space there this year.

The new premises on King’s Parade are far enough away and in a busy enough area that Fitzbillies believes there is enough demand for both.

Fitzbillies recently picked up the Best Bakery in the Eastern Region award at the National Bakery Awards, and the popular Instagram site Food Review Club named its Chelsea buns the Best in the World with a score of 9.6 out of 10.
