Death of Cambridge United fan Simon Dobbin linked to attack, post-mortem reveals
A post-mortem examination has shown there was a link between the death of Cambridge United fan Simon Dobbin and the attack that left him brain damaged.
Simon was left unable to walk or talk after being assaulted in East Street, Southend, following a match between Cambridge and Southend United on March 21, 2015. He died in October last year, aged 48.
Acting Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings, from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: “We have received the final report following the post-mortem examination and it shows pathologically there was a causal link between the assault Simon was subjected to, and his death.
“We will now carry out an investigation to see if we can directly and evidently show who was responsible for his death.
“I know Simon’s story has touched the lives of many people and we are supporting his family.
“My thoughts are with his friends and loved ones.”
His wife Nicole, who was his full-time carer, said before the attack Simon was “the life and soul of every party”.
Thirteen people were convicted and sentenced in connection with the incident.
Simon spent a year in hospital and in rehabilitation before returning home to Mildenhall, Suffolk, where he needed round-the-clock care.
His story gained national attention after his home was adapted and transformed by the BBC’s DIY SOS team. The show aired in January 2019.
An inquest into Simon’s death is due to open in Essex tomorrow.
