Cyclist injured as car crashes into empty shop in Mill Road, Cambridge

An electric car crashed into an empty shop front on Mill Road yesterday afternoon (23 April), leaving a cyclist with what were described as ‘minor injuries’.

The incident, which took place at around 4.15pm, resulted in the renowned city street being closed off while fire, police and ambulance crews attended the scene.

The shop, next to Bamboo and two doors down from the popular 196 Cocktail Bar, has been empty for some time.

A passer-by who witnessed the incident told the Cambridge Independent: “I heard a loud crash and saw a cyclist lying on the ground. The cyclist was taken away by paramedics. It was an electric car which is probably why the fire engines were also there. There were gas pipes there which also needed to be checked.

“The shop is covered in newspaper for renovations - if it had been the cafe next door that would have been awful because it was open at the time. I hope the cyclist is OK, it didn’t look good.”

Another reported a vehicle “slowing down at the Catherine Street junction, then suddenly speeding up” before the crash. Another witness nearby said it was fortunate that the car crashed into an empty shop and added: “I feel a bit blessed to be honest.”

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called just before 4.15pm yesterday (23 April) to reports of a collision between a car and a cyclist on Mill Road in Cambridge. Two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene. One patient, an adult woman, was transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”

The crash followed a day of traffic chaos in and around the city following a road traffic fatality which took place following a collision involving multiple vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the A14 yesterday evening (22 April), as reported in the Cambridge Independent.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire police said: “We were called at about 4.15pm yesterday (23 April) with reports of a collision between a car and a cyclist on Mill Road, Cambridge, with the car also colliding with a shop.
