Cherry Hinton Library has finally reopened after a long delay
Cherry Hinton Library has finally reopened after a long delay as part of the new Cherry Hinton Community Hub, following refurbishment works to the building.
The building opened its doors on Saturday (1 February). It had originally been due to open in May 2024 but was held up by lease negotiations..
It is a partnership project between Cambridgeshire County Council, Cambridge City Council and Cherry Hinton Community Benefit Society.
The existing building has been renovated and extended to provide a range of new facilities and modern spaces for the local community - including flexible library furniture which can be moved to adapt the space for events.
Cllr Tom Sanderson, chair of Cambridgeshire County Council’s communities, social mobility and inclusion committee said: “I’m pleased that Cherry Hinton Library has reopened for members of the public to enjoy.
“A new, modern home for the library will allow the local community to come together for social connection and to engage with culture and creativity.
“The new hub will provide an important service for the residents of Cherry Hinton and the revamped facilities will make it an even more welcoming and comforting place to visit.”
The revamped library space, which will offer a variety of fiction and non-fiction books (including children’s fiction and large print), as well as study spaces with computers and accessible public toilets with baby change facilities, will be managed by the county council.
The library will be open from 3pm until 6pm on Mondays, 9am until 5pm on Wednesdays, 9am until 1pm on Thursdays, 9am until 5pm on Fridays, and 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. It will be closed on Tuesdays and Sundays.
Cllr Rachel Wade, executive councillor for communities for Cambridge City Council said: “This is a great example of how partnership working can support the delivery of projects that benefit the local community.
“Libraries are a great way to access knowledge, stimulate your imagination, enhance your creativity, and come together as a community. The library is a safe space designed to fit the needs of residents.
“I hope that everyone enjoys the new modernised facilities at the library and the Cherry Hinton Hub.”
Anyone living, working, visiting, or studying in Cambridgeshire or neighbouring counties can join the library. Membership is free of charge and Cambridgeshire Libraries members can access thousands of books, eBooks, eAudiobooks, research resources and library computers. The building will offer free wifi and space for events, including board games clubs and craft sessions.
