Controlled explosion carried out on grenade on Mill Road in Cambridge




A controlled explosion has been carried out on a grenade discovered in a garden at a property on Mill Road in Cambridge.

Police initially closed Mill Road bridge and evacuated people from the area as well as nearby properties after they received a call about the discovery at 3pm on Monday (7 October).

Bomb disposal experts from the Explosives Ordnance Disposal team were called and a cordon was put around a property on the street. The bridge was reopened later in the afternoon but police were still asking people to avoid the area.

A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: “We were called at about 3pm today (7 October) with reports of a grenade being found in a garden at a property in Mill Road, Cambridge. Police are at the scene and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have been called.

They later added: “The Explosives Ordnance Disposal team arrived at 4.45pm. The grenade was removed and a controlled explosion carried out around 5.30pm.”

Greater Anglia and Network Rail both confirmed they had been aware of the incident but that it had not affected train services.
