Driver fails to stop as cyclist seriously injured on Dutch-style roundabout in Cambridge

A cyclist was seriously injured in a collision at Cambridge’s Dutch-style roundabout in which the motorist failed to stop.

Police have appealing for witnesses and information about the incident in Queen Edith’s Way, which happened at about 6.25pm on Friday.

A woman was cycling around the roundabout when she was struck by a car exiting it towards Mowbray Road.

The driver did not stop at the scene and the cyclist was left with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

PC Katie Cunningham said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have seen the collision or has dashcam footage of it.

“In particular, it is believed another cyclist who witnessed the collision may have tried to pursue the vehicle, however, they did not return to the scene and could be a vital witness.”

Anyone with information or has dashcam collision of the collision should report it via the force website, quoting incident 35/85340/22. Anyone without internet access should call 101.

The roundabout opened in July 2020, but has been mired in controversy, with the cost of installation ballooning to £2.4million - some £1.6million more than originally estimated.

Repairs were then required to its surface in April 2021, although the taxpayer did not foot the bill for it.

The roundabout, which connects Fendon Road, Queen Edith's Way and Mowbray Road, is designed to give equal priority to cyclists and pedestrians ahead of motorists. An instruction video on how to use it was released ahead of its opening.
