The Duchess of Cornwall made her first visit to the National Stud since being appointed as its patron.

As well as officially opening the stud’s refurbished stallion unit last Thursday (May 2), the keen horsewoman and racehorse owner visited the foaling unit and inspected mares and foals.

Camilla met members of staff and 23 students on the Newmarket stud’s diploma in stud practice and management course – as well as graduates – and also planted a tree to mark the visit.

Joe Callan, marketing and nominations manager at the stud, said: “It was a brilliant day. Her Royal Highness arrived and was greeted by dignitaries such as Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Julie Spence.”

Afterwards, Camilla went for a private lunch at the Jockey Club, of which she is an honorary member.
