Millions will be spent on new community facilities and schooling.

The Wing development by Marshall Group has been granted outline planning permission, and envisages 1,300 new homes in a 160-acre area off Newmarket Road, west of the park and ride. It also proposes sports pitches, tennis courts and allotments, a new primary school, nursery and community facilities.

Also included in the plan is retail space for car dealerships, shops and a market square.

Cllr Robert Turner, South Cambridgeshire District Council’s cabinet member for planning and local member for Fen Ditton, said: “I am really pleased we have this agreement signed and sealed as it has meant we have been able to formally grant their planning permission.

“The developer agreement that has been negotiated will unlock millions of pounds to make sure that Wing will be a thriving new community with excellent education, sporting facilities and transport links.”

The plans have been granted now that Section 106 funds for the development have been finalised.

These include £8.6 million for a primary school, £5.9million for a secondary school, £2.27million for improvements to the Newmarket Road corridor, £475,000 for improvements to Stourbridge Common, £250,000 to support bus services, and £165,000 for community development works.

A spokesperson for Marshall Group said: “We’re delighted to be working with the three councils, Cambridge city, Cambridgeshire county and South Cambridgeshire district, to bring forward the Wing development, which follows Marshall’s decision to commit to Cambridge.

“There’s a great deal of work needed to be done to bring forward the detailed plan for each of the phases of the development.”
