Fire engulfs cars at BP petrol station on A14 near Newmarket

Two cars went up in flames at a petrol station, prompting the closure of a section of the A14 on Sunday (10 March) and leaving two people in need of hospital treatment.

Four fire engines from Cambridge and two from Newmarket were called at 1.25pm to tackle the fire at the BP garage, off the eastbound carriageway near Newmarket.

The 20 firefighters arrived to find a blaze engulfing two cars on the forecourt.

One of the pumps was destroyed in the fire.

An East of England Ambulance Service Trust spokesperson said: “Two ambulances, and ambulance officer vehicle and four hazardous area response team vehicles responded to reports of a fire at a petrol station near Newmarket. Three patients were assessed at the scene, and two were transported to West Suffolk Hospital.”

Lanes one and two of the A14 at junction 37 for Newmarket and Exning were closed eastbound and Cambridgeshire police advised drivers to avoid the area. There was further disruption on the A142.

The fire crews used breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control.

The A14 reopened later on Sunday.
