Fire in Grand Arcade in early hours caused by heater

Firefighters were called to the Grand Arcade after an electrical fault in a retailer’s heater led to a fire in the early hours.

Crews from Cambridge, Cottenham, Linton, Sawston, Huntingdon and Cambourne responded to the call at 3.46am on Wednesday, February 8.

The incident command unit and a turntable ladder also attended.

They found a fire in a storeroom, which they put out with a fire extinguisher and cleared the smoke with a positive pressure ventilation fan.

The fire service said: “The incident was handed over to the responsible person, before crews left the area at around 5.15am.”

Grand Arcade manager Martin Macwhinnie confirmed to the Cambridge Independent that the fire was caused by an electrical fault in a retailer’s heater and said the fire service “helped very quickly and efficiently”.

Thankfully, apart from the heater itself, there was no damage to any property or stock.
