Cambridgeshire fire service warning after chimney fires in Bassingbourn and Impington

Two chimney fires were tackled by firefighters in two days, prompting a warning as colder weather arrives.

A crew from Gamlingay was called at 9.31pm on Saturday (October 14) to Walnut Tree Close in Bassingbourn, where they used small gear to extinguish a chimney fire.

Then at 4.22pm on Sunday, a crew from Cambridge dealt with a similar fire at a property in Cambridge Road in Impington.

A fire service spokesman said: “Please ensure that you get your chimney swept and brick work inspected regularly, at least once a year. The debris buildup in the flue can be set alight when heating the home, which could cause a significant fire. Regular chimney maintenance will help prevent this from happening.

“As the cold weather begins to arrive, it is important to get your chimney swept before lighting it for the first time.”
