Fire at industrial waste plant in Cottenham

Firefighters have been tackling a huge blaze at an industrial waste plant in Cottenham.

The fire service was called to the building fire at the Malary site in Brookfield Business Park at 8.38am on Thursday (April 2).

Eight fire engines attended, where the fire service said machinery containing oil waste is alight.

Crews from Cambridge, Cottenham, Littleport, Ely, Soham, Sawston, Chatteris and Huntingdon attended, along with the incident command unit.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The site was evacuated and all persons are accounted for. Firefighters are working to extinguish the fire as we speak.”

A control room operator confirmed the blaze involved machinery with oil inside and that crew used foam and specialist equipment to tackle the fire.

A witness said: “I saw firemen running down Twentypence Road with hosepipes.

“A member of staff from Malarys walked past. I shouted at him to ask if everyone is OK. He said yes. I hope all the staff are safe.

“This is big. It wasn't just one fire engine - there have been so many vehicles going there.”
