He has had a career in construction, and is a former director at Morgan Sindall Construction in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Mr Ensch also served as a non-executive director of the employment and skills board for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority for two years, where he focused on championing employment opportunities for disadvantaged young people in the region.

He joins Labour’s Anna Smith, Conservative Paul Bristow and the Liberal Democrats’ Lorna Dupré on the current list of candidates vying to lead the Combined Authority following the 1 May election. Labour’s incumbent mayor, Dr Nik Johnson, is not standing for re-election for health reasons.

Mr Ensch said: “I am thrilled to represent the Green Party in this mayoral election.

Together, we can build a region that not only thrives economically but also leads the way in environmental innovation and social progress."

The Green Party said his “commitment to environmental stewardship and social equity” made him “an ideal candidate” and his vision for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough includes “investing in green infrastructure, and fostering a vibrant, inclusive economy”.

Mr Ensch earned 53 per cent of the vote from members in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to earn his place on the ballot.

Former Peterborough city councillor Ed Murphy received 33 per cent.

The Greens currently have 11 councillors on councils in the area, including Cambridge City Council, Huntingdonshire District Council and Peterborough City Council. It is part of the joint administration with the Lib Dems, Labour and independent councillors in Huntingdonshire.
