Guided busway closure at Impington extended to March
The closure of the guided busway at Impington has been extended until March, Highways England has confirmed today (Monday, February 10).
Work to widen the bridge in the village as part of the A14 improvement scheme has prompted a lengthy closure of the busway underneath.
The work has proven to be far more challenging than initially envisaged, leading to a number of changes to the completion date for the work.
Highways England said in a statement today: “We regret to advise that we once again need to do this.
“Cambridgeshire County Council’s remedial work to repair the busway following the damage is now complete, but until the work to the A14 bridge directly above the track, which has been affected by a number of factors including weather, is also completed and the cycle track surface is re-laid it remains unsafe to re-open the busway for either buses or cyclists, so the closure will again need to be extended.
“We are very sorry that this is the case and are doing as much as we safely can to try and complete the works rapidly. We are working closely with Cambridgeshire County Council and Stagecoach, and high-level discussions are taking place on a daily basis.
“The new anticipated re-opening date is early March. Further work will be needed beyond this point, but these will be overnight when there are no buses running.”
The extension means that the bus route going into Cambridge (southbound) between Histon and Orchard Park East will continue to be diverted via the Histon junction (J32) over the A14 during the closure.
People travelling into Cambridge from Histon can board diverted services from the stop on Cambridge Road.
The cycle path diversion, which is currently using one half of the junction 32 roundabout, will also remain in place.
The statement continues: “We anticipate that following the resurfacing of part of the junction roundabout and one of the slip roads it will be safe for us to re-open the cycle / footpaths on both sides of the roundabout. We will let people know as soon as we are ready to do this.
“We apologise for any more inconvenience caused by the further delays to the A14 works and as a result, the continued delayed re-opening of the Guided Busway track at Impington.”
