Helen marks 60th with triathlon for Cambridge City Foodbank
A long-serving volunteer will mark her 60th birthday by completing a triathlon to raise money for Cambridge City Foodbank.
Helen Johnson, who lives in the city, will face a 750m swim, a 19km bike ride and a 5km run when she takes on the feat next Saturday (17 May).
“I’m slightly horrified by the fact that I am turning 60 this year and figured that there could be no better distraction than completing a triathlon in support of a charity that I am passionate about,” she said.
Helen has been volunteering at the foodbank for around seven years and has worked in both the warehouse and its welcome centres. She will be completing the triathlon event as part of the Outlaw Half Nottingham.
Helen said: “I actually have arthritis in both of my knees so the race will be a real challenge and will almost certainly be my last. However, knowing that I’m raising money to support those facing hunger in Cambridge will be fantastic motivation to get me across that finish line.”
The foodbank is supporting more people on a 12-month rolling basis than it has done in its 15-year history. In total, it has provided just under 18,000 three-day emergency food parcels across the past 12 months.
Foodbank CEO Steve Clay thanked Helen for her efforts and said he was “blown away” by people’s generosity and willingness to go above and beyond for the charity.
