Why a section of Hills Road in Cambridge has been closed over safety

Hills Road in Cambridge remains closed to traffic today (Monday, July 24) for safety reasons due to work at The Church of Our Lady and the English Martyrs.

The carriageway between Lensfield Road and Harvey Road has been shut since 1.30pm on Friday.

A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “The closure is due to emergency repair works at the catholic church on the corner of Hills Road. The closure is to protect the public in the short-term while the works are carried out.

“Currently, as a precaution we have extended the closure until the end of this week.”

Steeplejacks climbed the building’s tower in May looking for signs of loose masonry on the Roman Catholic church.

The steeple stands at the liturgical north-west corner of the grade I-listed church at the corner of Lensfield Road and Hills Road. The tower rises in three stages with angle buttresses.

A diversion remains in place during the closure, with the alternative route for vehicles via Brooklands Avenue, Trumpington Road, Lensfield Road.
