However, overnight closures will remain in place until October 8 as well as some temporary traffic lights.

Last month, the southern section from the Gilbert Road junction to Huntingdon Road was completed and opened to all traffic.

The Greater Cambridge Partnership scheme is designed to ease congestion and improve air quality by aiding walking, cycling and public transport.

Cllr Neil Gough, chair of the GCP executive board, said: “I am delighted that we can reopen the whole of Histon Road to two-way traffic and everyone can benefit from better, safer and more reliable journeys along this key route between the A14, villages to the north and the city.

“We believe this project will help to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and switch to more sustainable modes of transport.”

All users will be able to use the enhanced Histon Road when it is fully reopened in both directions from 6pm. Stagecoach will notify customers about its plans to reintroduce bus services.

The overnight closures will take place between 8pm and 6am on the section between the Gilbert Road junction and the King’s Hedges Road junction.

A diversion route will be in place during this time.
