The rally will start from three locations in the city before converging on Parker’s Piece for speeches.

When is it?

The rally will take place on Sunday, February 26. Marches will start from three locations in Cambridge at midday before heading to Parker’s Piece for 1pm.

Where are the protesters meeting?

The rally will leave from Sainsbury’s car park in Brooks Road, Tesco’s car park in Newmarket Road and Shire Hall car park on Castle Hill at midday and head to Parker’s Piece.

Who is organising the event?

The protest has been organised by the Cambridgeshire Residents’ Group with Cambs Against Congestion Charge and the Mill Road Traders’ Association.

Who will be speaking at the rally?

Speakers include a representative from the GMB Union, Cambridge trader Neil Mackay, Independent South Cambridgeshire District Council councillor Dan Lentell, and Shapour Meftah, of Mill Road Traders’ Association. A statement from Labour Cambridge City Council councillor Robert Dryden will be read out. Local residents are also expected to speak at the event.

Why is it being held?

The rally is a protest against the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) plans for road charging in Cambridge, which the GCP says would fund an expanded, better bus network with low fares.

Campaigners oppose the charges - which would be set at £5 for weekdays from 7am-7pm for cars, and more for larger vehicles - and are calling for a referendum on the decision. You can read more about their arguments on the subject here. County councillors are due to make the decision on whether the plans should go ahead.
