Cambridge joined cities, towns and villages all over the world in lighting a beacon to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last night.
Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Julie Spence OBE QPM lit the beacon on Castle Mound on Thursday (June 2) watched by crowds of well-wishers.
More than 3,500 beacons were simultaneously lit up around the world to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.
The Queen began the ceremony by touching a globe representing the Commonwealth nations, symbolically sending a chain of lights from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace.
Cambridge’s celebrations on Castle Hill were part of an event organised jointly by Cambridgeshire County Council and Cambridge City Council.
The special beacon lighting event featured the Salvation Army Band together with a Guard of Honour.
Four days of celebrations marking the Queen’s 70-year reign began on Thursday morning.
