Inquest opens into death of 16-year-old Dishone Lloyd, who drowned at Burnside Lakes in Cherry Hinton

An inquest has been opened into the death of a 16-year-old boy who drowned after getting into difficulty while swimming with friends at a former quarry in Cambridge.

The body of Dishone Lloyd, from Harlow, Essex, was found the day after he was reported missing at Burnside Lakes in Cherry Hinton on 12 August 2024.

At the time of his death the teenager was just days away from collecting his GCSEs at Mark Hall Academy in Harlow.

Cambridgeshire area coroner Caroline Jones adjourned the case until the week of 24 February.

The hearing heard the group climbed a high fence to access the location and Dishone was last seen at around 5pm struggling in the deep water.

A search was launched with police divers and a body was found the following day.

Matt Carter, headteacher at Mark Hall Academy, said Dishone was not just a student but a “cherished member of our family and community”.

Following the teenager’s death, Pippa Heylings MP called for action to improve security and prevent further tragedies at the lakes.

She said: “My thoughts go out to the family and friends and to all the emergency responders to this tragic incident. This is a matter for local and even regional concern because youngsters travel for miles to reach the Burnside Lakes.

“We need to convene a high-level meeting with the police and crime commissioner and community safety partnership among others to prevent further tragedies.”

A new science district will be created off Coldhams Lane, which will mean the lakes will be opened up. It is hoped this will improve safety on site.
