Lloyds Bank to close Cambridge branch - a month after Barclays’ closure in same road

Lloyds Bank will close its branch in Chesterton Road, Cambridge, on July 31, 2023 - a month after Barclays is to shut its branch in the same street.

It is one of 81 closures announced by Lloyds Group and NatWest Group across the country this week and follows a review of usage.

The bank said: “We’ll continue to invest in our branch network, but we have to make sure our branches are where customers need and use them most. As a result, we've made the difficult decision to close this branch due to customers using it less often. In addition, the majority of customers are also using alternative ways to bank and we have another branch close by.”

The number of personal banking customers was down 52 per cent in October last year, compared to October 2017, while business customer numbers were down 59 per cent.

Some 84 per cent of branch customers also used other Lloyds Bank branches, internet banking or phone banking, it confirmed.

Numbers using the cashpoint have also fallen, with 26 per cent fewer personal customers and nine per cent fewer business customers.

The nearest alternative branch is the Cambridge University branch at 3 Sidney Street.

The decision follows Barclays’ announcement that it will close its Chesterton Road branch on June 28 - one of 14 closures it announced that month.

Lloyds Group is to close 39 outlets – 26 Lloyds branches, nine Halifax branches and four Bank of Scotland outlets – between July and September, while. NatWest Group will shut 42 branches. It brings the total closures that have been announced so far this year to 213.

Among them is the Halifax in Market Street, Newmarket, which will close on September 11 and Lloyds in Rightwell East, in Peterborough’s Bretton Centre, which is due to shut on July 17.
