Daniel Zeichner MP backs Cambridge Re-Use as it recycles furniture and supports those on low incomes

Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner paid a visit to Cambridge Re-Use after it received a lottery boost.

The charity has been given significant funding from the National Lottery Community Fund for its work in encouraging people to recycle rather than discard their furniture.

Mr Zeichner visited on November 11 and met with Jatinder Purewal, funding officer at the National Lottery Community Fund, and Cara Moorey from Cambridge Re-Use.

He said: “It is fantastic to be supporting important charities like Re-Use Cambridge. From tables and tea stands, to cabinets and chairs, to sofas and sools our country throws away 110,000 tonnes of furniture that could be recycled. Such furniture would be welcome in

most homes.

“Good furniture makes a house turn truly into a home. Many households search for bargain deals for furniture that is both appealing and pricey. But with a crippling cost of living crisis many local families are struggling to afford furniture which makes funding charities like this one all the more important.”

Nearly 32 per cent of household furniture waste is reusable in its current state - and with minor repairs, that figure rises to 52 per cent.

Cambridge Re-Use has a secondhand shop in Cherry Hinton Road that is open to all. It enables families on low incomes to become members and access good quality furniture at a discount.
