New 12-mile Cambridgeshire section of A14 to open on Monday at 5am
Motorists have been reminded that the latest section of the A14 upgrade will open on Monday. (December 9)
The southern 12-mile bypass, which runs between Swavesey and Ellington, will become operational for traffic to and from Cambridge at 5am.
Allied to its operational status will be the permanent closure of a busy three-mile stretch of the A14 between Godmanchester, J24, and Spittals, J23.
The old road will be closed in both directions so that engineers can work on removing the Huntingdon viaduct at Christmas and is expected to be completed in 2022.
There are a number of changes to the road system itself and at certain junctions, it will not always be possible to join or leave the new road in all directions.
All A14 junctions east of and including Girton, as well as the A1 junctions, will maintain their existing junction numbers and motorists travelling eastbound on the new bypass will still have to join a section of 40mph narrow lanes roadworks from the Swavesey junction.
Variable mandatory speed limits will help to reduce congestion and ensure safety.
Slow moving vehicles are prohibited from using the new bypass and will be directed to use alternative local access roads.
The new A14 junction numbers will be as follows:
New Ellington, junction 21
Brampton interchange, junction 22
Godmanchester and A1198, junction 23
Swavesey, junction 24
Bar Hill, junction 25
All A14 junctions East of and including Girton, as well as the A1 junctions, will maintain their existing junction numbers.
Work on the rest of the project, between Swavesey and Milton, continues and is on schedule to completed as planned by December 2020.
