The Revd James Crockford has been appointed dean of chapel at Jesus College. He will join in September.

Currently serving as associate vicar at the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, Oxford, James is also honorary chaplain at Magdalen College, Oxford.

He previously served the parish of St Paulinus, Crayford, on the edge of south-east London, following his ordination in 2014.

James originally read music at the University of Nottingham and in 2007 became a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music in saxophone performance.

No stranger to Cambridge, he read for his Tripos and MPhil in theology at Trinity Hall while training for ordained ministry at Ridley Hall.

James is also engaged in doctoral study on the poetics of Augustine of Hippo and researches and writes more broadly on the intersection of musical aesthetics and philosophical theology.

As dean of chapel, James will fulfil a major pastoral role in the Jesus College community, as well as take responsibility for daily worship in its ancient and beautiful chapel – including services accompanied by the renowned college choir.

Commenting on his appointment, James said: “'I am enormously excited and humbled to be joining the vibrant community at Jesus College as its next dean of chapel.

"The more I've got to know the college, both as a student in Cambridge and more recently, the more impressed I am with its inclusive and engaging chapel life, its rounded and creative learning environment, and the quality and warmth of its whole community.

"I look forward to settling in and getting to know students and colleagues. The future at Jesus College looks bright indeed and it's an honour to be part of that.”

Professor James Clackson, vice-master of Jesus College, said: “The dean of chapel plays a key role in our college community and James will bring excellent qualities and experience to the post. We are thrilled to announce James’ appointment and look forward to welcoming him back to Cambridge.”
