Norovirus and flu warning: Addenbrooke’s Hospital reminds visitors to stay away if at all possible
A number of bays are closed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge because of cases of norovirus - the so-called winter vomiting bug.
Health chiefs reissued a reminder that to people not to visit Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals to see friends and family unless “absolutely necessary”.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH), which runs the hospitals, also predicted the cold snap may provoke a rise in flu cases.
On January 3, a third of wards at Addenbrooke’s had patients with flu or other respiratory viruses.
Today, a CUH spokesperson confirmed to the Cambridge Independent that no wards were currently closed due to flu, but said the advice around visiting remains the same, particularly with the emergence of norovirus cases.
Parents and carers of children under 12 are strongly advised not to bring them to the hospitals. Those who do will only be admitted onto wards at the discretion of the ward manager.
Dr Ashley Shaw, medical director at CUH, said: “While we have strict infection control processes in place we really need the public to help us too. Please think twice before visiting the hospital and only come if it is absolutely necessary.”
Those who are unwell and require medical advice are advised to contact the NHS 111 line and only attend the hospital if advised or if it is an emergency.
