Owners of noisy car exhausts to be targeted by police using sound monitoring equipment in South Cambridgeshire

Noise equipment that will help police to tackle anti-social motorists is being deployed in hotspot areas of South Cambridgeshire.

Neighbourhood police officers have been trained to use the sound monitoring equipment, which alerts officers at the roadside if an exhaust is too loud.

It is illegal to modify an exhaust to be louder than the legal limit of 80 decibels for cars..

Motorists who contravene the law can face a fixed penalty notice for either failure to maintain the system or using a vehicle with an altered system or excessive noise. They will also be issued a Section 59 warning, which can result in their vehicle being seized.

Sgt Rob Taylor, from the South Cambs neighbourhood policing team, said: “Noise pollution is a concern for many people living in villages within South Cambridgeshire.

“Now the team are trained to use the equipment, we will target hotspot areas including Milton, Northstowe and Cambourne as well as car cruises.

“Fines will be issued to help reduce anti-social motorists and make our communities quieter, safer places to live.”

Visit the force website if there is an area you would like police to target, or to report anti-social motorists.
