School and sixth form at Northstowe Learning Community officially opened
Guests gathered for the official opening of a sixth form and a primary school as part of the second phase of development on the Northstowe Learning Community campus.
Visitors took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony before they were given a guided tour of the new sixth form building.
Claire Mills, principal of Northstowe Learning Community, said: “This is a landmark moment for our school and our community.
“The launch of Northstowe Sixth Form and Northstowe Primary School within Northstowe Learning Community means that pupils can now continue their educational journey in a purpose-built environment that supports their aspirations and ambitions.
“Our vision is to create a place where every pupil is known as an individual, supported to achieve their full potential, and prepared for the future ahead.
“I would like to thank everyone who attended the opening and to the current sixth formers who proudly showed the guests around the new building.”
Phase 2 of the project includes a 600-pupil expansion of Northstowe Secondary College, as well as the creation of Northstowe Sixth Form with up to 400 places.
In addition, a new primary school and pre-school – Northstowe Primary School – is open which will eventually provide 630 and 78 pupil places, respectively.
Northstowe Learning Community is run by Meridian Trust, with Cambridgeshire County Council overseeing the development. Kier led the design and construction of the new facilities.
Mark Dady, managing director, Kier Construction Eastern & Midlands, said: “This opening ceremony signifies not just the conclusion of a construction project, but the beginning of a new chapter for the local community and all those who will benefit from this fantastic learning campus in Northstowe.
“We are honoured to have delivered this project on behalf of Cambridgeshire County Council to provide a high-quality learning environment that will benefit staff, students and future generations of this wonderful emerging town.”
Land and funding provided by Homes England, the Government’s housing and regeneration agency, supported the development of the existing education estate and the latest new infrastructure.
Matthew Brown, head of large sites at Homes England, added: “Providing both land and funding for this crucial educational development in Northstowe is a core part of our commitment to building thriving communities.
“The state-of-the-art facilities at Northstowe Learning Community will benefit pupils from early years through to sixth form. By working closely with our partners at Cambridgeshire County Council, Meridian Trust, and Kier, we’ve not only helped deliver much-needed educational spaces, but also continued to champion Northstowe’s pioneering spirit and reinforce our broader vision of ensuring Northstowe becomes a vibrant, sustainable place for existing and future generations.”
The first cohorts of sixth form students and pre-school children started in September last year, marking the beginning of this new phase in Northstowe Learning Community’s development.
